Conferences
Dermatology residents have multiple opportunities to discuss patient problems in detail at the following conferences:
Cleveland Dermatologic Society: The society holds quarterly meetings which draw approximately 200 community dermatologists, faculty, and residents from three academic teaching hospitals in the city. During these half-day meetings, patients are presented and discussed in detail by the residents from one of the two training programs in the city, or by community-based dermatologists. Guest speakers are also invited to provide presentations.
Citywide Grand Rounds: Twice a month the conference is held at university Hospitals Case Medical Center, once a month at Metro Health Medical Center and once a month at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation.
Didactic Conferences: Didactic sessions addressing a wide variety of clinical topics are presented, including dermatologic surgery, skin cancer, laser surgery, photosensitivity diseases, contact dermatitis, pediatric dermatology, cutaneous mycology, syphilology, parasitology, skin manifestations of HIV infection, and radiation therapy. Basic science didactic sessions include, among other topics, the structure and function of skin, immunodermatology, bullous diseases, and cutaneous T-cell lymphomas. A comprehensive dermatopathology course is covered in regularly scheduled didactic sessions with one scheduled hour of faculty teaching in dermatopathology each week.
Faculty/Trainee Research Conference: Each month, a faculty member or a post-doctoral trainee will present research being conducted in the laboratory.
Visiting Professors Program: Nationally and internationally prominent dermatologists and cutaneous biologists are invited to spend one to two days in the Dermatology Department's Skin Disease Research Center. Pertinent clinical and research topics are presented to gain a better understanding of the cause and treatment of skin diseases. The Visiting Professors Program is jointly sponsored by the department, the Murdough Family Center for Psoriasis and the Skin Diseases Research Center.
Rotations
First Year
- Eight months of outpatient clinics at University Hospitals Case Medical Center (UHCMC), MetroHealth Medical Center (Metro), and the Veteran Affairs (VA) Medical Center
- Three months of consults at either UHCMC, Metro, or the VA
- One month of dermatopathology at UHCMC and Metro
Second Year
- Five months of outpatient clinics at UHCMC, Metro, and the VA
- Two to four months of consults at either UHCMC, Metro, or the VA
- One month of dermatopathology
- Two months of research time, subject to Research Committee approval.
- Two months of dermatological surgery
Third Year
- Seven months of outpatient clinics at UHCMC, Metro, and the VA
- One to two months of consults at UHCMC, Metro, or the VA
- Two months of dermatopathology
- Two months of dermatological surgery
During consult months, residents see all inpatient, outpatient, and emergency department consults. The resident is also responsible for all inpatients admitted to the dermatology service.
Residents divide call equally from September of their first year to August of their third year. Third-year residents act as as "second call" to back up the on-call resident. Call is taken from home.
The rotation schedule is subject to change on annual basis, or upon programmatic needs.

Application Process
Allopathic Students: Applications to our residency program must be submitted through the
Electronic Residency Application System (ERAS). For more detailed information on how to apply, contact your Dean's Office (U.S. medical school graduates), the
CARMS (Canadian medical school graduates), or the
ECFMG (foreign medical school graduates). Your completed ERAS application should include the following:
- Completed ERAS Application
- Curriculum Vitae
- Personal statement
- Dean's letter
- Medical school transcripts
- Results of all USMLE Examination Scores
- At least three letters of recommendation from physicians in support of your application to the program
Applications for the July 2010 positions must be submitted by November 1, 2008. Applicants invited for an interview will be notified via email in December. Final selections are made through the
National Residency Match Program (NRMP). Please make sure you are registered with the NRMP in order to participate in the match.

Osteopathic Students:
Osteopathic interns do not use the ERAS system. Please visit the University Hospitals Richmond Medical Center website at
http://www.uhhsrh.org to download a version of the application. The application includes all of the information listed above. If you have taken both USMLE and COMLEX, please submit both scores. Information on how to apply is listed on the site.
In addition please submit three additional items:
1. Acting Internships in Dermatology, rotation sites and attendings
2. Number of weeks Acting Intership, sites and attendings
3. Number of months Audition Electives
Please note the we place higher value on a balanced and challenging medical/surgical elective curriculum, as oposed to a curriculum that is overly represented with dermatology electives.
