DEPARTMENT OF UROLOGY - RESEARCH

The James and Eilleen Dicke Research Laboratory

The mission of the CASE/UHC medical complex is the integration of basic and clinical research programs to move potential therapies from the bench to the bedside as quickly as possible. The School of Medicine has consistently been in the top 20 institutions in the nation as judged by funding from the National Institutes of Health. It has also produced 8 Nobel Laureates. To facilitate communication and collaboration between the basic science and clinical faculties, the Biomedical Research Building (BRB), which opened in 1993, is connected by an all weather walkway to the UHC complex.

The Department of Urology has laboratory space both in the Wood Research Tower, School of Medicine (The James and Eilleen Dicke Research Laboratory) and at the Cleveland VAMC. The James and Eilleen Dicke Research Laboratory is equipped to perform most of the techniques commonly used in molecular biology, cell biology and biochemistry. In conjunction with the CASE/Ireland Cancer Center, the School of Medicine runs several state of the art core facilities including, real-time PCR, microarray analysis and computer integrated imaging.
A majority of the faculty within the department have active basic and/or clinical research programs. Among the areas currently being investigated by departmental faculty are: prostate cancer, prostatitis, urolithiasis, pediatric urology, male sexual dysfunction, female urology, neurourology and trauma. Residents are encouraged to participate in these programs both during the PG IV rotation and also throughout the course of the training program. Resident and summer-student fellowships for upper-level undergraduates or first year medical students are available.
